Excellent article: An Overly Long Guide to Being A Software Architect by David Ing. It is a long read, so make yourself some comfort time to enjoy David's 11 bits of advice. One thing I believe is that in an organization a Software Architect should have a wide span. That is they should not just focus on a single project with a small group of people. Instead they should act as a knowledge manager for many people in the organization and possess a broad knowledge base.
Much like a manager a Software Architect is valued not so much as an individual contributor but as someone who amplifies the contributions of the people they work with.
